What's the difference between "Poly" and "Dating"?

I got to thinking about this while chatting with college event booker about college (and young adult) sexuality and mating habits. She mumbled something about "it used to be called dating..."

This seems a timely topic as I'll be speaking at Humboldt State University on April 3rd.

There's a great deal of interest in Poly among college students, and likewise for a lot of different folks well beyond college age. In particular it's not an uncommon topic of discussion, self identification or profile disclosure, especially for the sexually savvy under-35 demographics.

I'd love to hear your personal perspective on this.

1. CREATIVE OUTLETS

We all need some sort of creative outlet. Even the urge to burst out singing in the shower is about this inexplicable need to create and express. (I sing often in the shower but it’s a miracle that the mirrors don’t crack from this offense to nature. Still, I sing.)

In this busy world, it’s a challenge to carve out the time to make creativity happen. It’s even harder to do so with any form of regularity and disciplined approach. I’m saddened deeply that my crazed schedule doesn’t allow me to take ongoing art or dance classes. But I have managed to wiggle myself into several writing contracts that put the yoke of deadlines upon my shoulders.

I love deadlines. It sharpens my focus and keeps me reined in from distractions. I adore editors who keep me on track and challenge me with interesting assignments and feedback. They’re like coaches for the nerdy set.

I’m saying this now because I just wrestled down another article. Why does this pleasure, which I love to do so much, causes me such difficulty and pain? Really… writing about sex advice for zombie lovers shouldn’t take so long. But at least I enjoyed it.

I hope you’ll drop by and read the fruits of my struggle and deranged mind in my bi-monthly column “Mondo Midori” in www.CarnalNation.com You’ll find articles on my adventures in the sexual undergrounds of Japan, personal confessions and more. Soon I’ll be writing regularly for www.SexIs.com and have another bit of Japan expose come out in the new mag, VanGutenberg. Somewhere along the way I need buckle down and work on my next book. Yup, a new book! I know - it’s about time. It’s really challenging to write creatively while on the road touring and teaching.

Need help renaming the Bedroom Burlesque class

I have this totally fun class but the class title isn't quite right in describing it correctly or drawing people as it should. I figured some of you might come up with something accurately descriptive and catchy.

I think people are getting stuck on the word "burlesque" and what ever that means to them. Yeah, it's totally over used now. I used the word in the title a while back in a totally cheeky way as the class is designed for those of us women of all different body types who are dance challenged, having no desire to be on stage - but want to look hot and feel confident taking it off. Just another day in London.
Got up groggy.
(although Brian Eno's iPhone app, Bloom, did help me to get to sleep better than Benedryl)

Strong cup of fine English tea.

Brunch with fab Kiwi dyke pal at a down-to-earth queer cafe in Leicester Sq.

1. 2010: ALREADY AN EXCITING YEAR!

Only a month in, and yet, this year has come roaring in like a confidant tiger for me.

Bang 4 The Buck, our women’s party in Seattle and fundraiser for AIDS LifeCycle, brought together nearly 250 sexy, rowdy women for an amazing evening of celebration and general naughtiness. The cheering and screaming was the loudest and most excited we’ve had in the six years of Bang. There’s no other event like this – and the joy and satisfaction seems to last for days after the doors close. I’m still blissed out from it.

The amount raised is still being calculated at the time of this writing, but I will post the total funds raised in my LiveJournal blog, Facebook, Twitter and other on-line venues. The other members of the Bang organizing team simply amaze me. It’s such a pleasure to collaborate with these amazing women…. Miss Indigo Blue is funny as any of the best vaudevillians and super charming to boot. Lydia McLane is so powerfully efficient as a project manager that I think she could do wonders in the U.N. Kelly & Lee provide the strength and behind-the-scenes organizing that make it all come off seemingly effortlessly.

Above all, the women who come to this party – they make the evening awesome and the months of work leading up to it, completely worthwhile and satisfying. Wow! Thank you all!

Additionally, the winter Rope Bondage Dojo went beautifully with talented and motivated students. Please note that this year we’ll only have 2 more Dojos due to the intense work schedule of all the teachers. The spring Dojo will be in New York City in April and summer Dojo brings us back to San Francisco in July.

Two different Intensives are added to the calendar this year.

Last year’s successful weekend with Laura Antoniou and myself returns “Passionate Bonds: Creating EmPowered D/s Relationships” to Toronto at the end of July.

I added another “Forte Femme: Women’s Sensual Dominance Intensive” weekend in September. There’s been a huge interest in women finding their grace and power in the bedroom.

As my event calendar fills up, I’m writing more as well. I have to confess that it’s really hard to find a quiet place during the travels to clear my head and peck away at the keyboard, but I do my best. It’s been immense fun getting to write on what ever I wish in my bi-monthly column on Carnal Nation.

Cranky about Massachusetts election.

The citizens of Mass. have the luxury of a good state run health care program. So can they relate to how bad it is for those of us in other states?

I'm also cranky about the fickle short sightedness of the American voting public.
Yes, the economy sucks. But it could have been so much worse. No things aren't resolved quickly and life isn't happily ever after because we elected a different president and government. Do they not have any idea how long it takes to turn a battleship? It's not like turning around a little sail boat. All the pieces that actions that must be taken by all the different entities before progress becomes visible and tangible - I guess people just can't wrap their head around that. We want instant gratification. Those with the loooong view set goals, people and policies in place. Those without the long view just flail and shout fail to plan on the long time line and never get what they want. But I bet it sure feel good to act out of short term anger, resentment and frustration.

I'm cranky that there wasn't a better Dem candidate for that post.

I'm cranky about the Republican politicians who seem driven to bring down the President and his objectives, even at the cost of bringing down the nation with their partisan goals. I guess it's better if, 3 years down the road they, can look at the crumbling state of the Union and blame the Democrats and the President, but ignore the blood on their own hands.

I am cranky about the general lack of historical and political illiteracy of so many of the citizens which leave them suspeptible to emotional and irrational rhetoric. Feeling of self righteousness in the moment is the cheap drug for the masses...

ISO experienced demo buddies for SF Humiliation play class

On Thursday, January 28th in San Francisco, I'm teaching "Make 'em Blush, Make 'em Squirm: Erotic Humiliation Play" at the Citadel.

I am searching and screening for a few experienced demo buddies for this class.

Please find the criteria below. If you're interested, please drop me a private message through this site or via e mail at midori@fhp-inc.com. I'll send further questions after that.

You must genuinely find humiliation play to be exciting and be a major part of their erotic play.
You must be able to provide your own after care.
You must be able to do a scene in front of the class
You must be able to articulate your interests to me and to those attending the class.
Gender and orientation is not important
You understand that I will screen them further and I may not choose them.
Couples (of any gender and orientation) who play with humiliation scene are also very welcome.

I'm often asked what exactly I'm going to do... there is no script that I follow. As humiliation play is subjective, each scene in each class is unique and fully negotiated. One constant is that each scenes are short.
