1.    50 SHADES OF GREY – MY 2 CENTS

Yes, by now you’ve heard about the books. Or saw the Ellen spoof. (http://youtu.be/on3JCwnwHbU ) Or read the Laura Antoniou spoof. (http://lantoniou.blogspot.com/2012/04/50-shades-of-sellout.html ) Maybe you even saw the 50 Shades stand-up by Bruce Vilanch and Sharon McNight at IML. Perhaps some of you even read the actual book.

Media’s contacted me about it.
My pervy friends deny it.
My writer friends groan about it.
My students and readers ask me if I recommend it.

Many of the media seem to be fishing for scandalous angles. Death of Feminism! Perversion of society! Downfall of civilization! True nature of women’s sexual desires revealed! Blah blah blah. They’re itching for some kinky dirt and titillating commentary.
I share my observations with them. Silence of disappointment permeates the air. They prod me some more. I answer. More silence. Then they go away, apparently in search of more salacious sources.

The story, its genre and its popularity are all old news. Escapist erotic romance has been around for a long time, and it’s a booming business lately. Every so many years a book or movie catches the public’s attention, featuring sex styles deemed inappropriate for polite company of its time. “Story of O” “Madame Emmanuelle” “Exit to Eden” “Looking for Mr. Goodbar” “Last Tango in Paris” “Claiming of Sleeping Beauty” or “Secretary”, just to name a few.

So what’s the big deal with this one? It’s the medium of distribution, of course! E books and e book readers remove the embarrassing cheese ball element of carrying paperbacks adorned with uber-manly heroes and gasping beauties, both with impossibly perfect hair.

Obviously calm truth bores media.

Many of my kinky pals, however, just roll their eyes about the books. They lament the onslaught of “kink curious tourists” invading their realm. They snark about how incorrect the play depictions are. They smirk at the questions and assumptions people bring from reading the book.

That’s just snotty and condescending. Where did each of us find our first sparks of pervy adventuring? I doubt many of us had highbrow sources with cultural approval. Stolen porn or dirty books, naughty suggestions by a lover, something glimpsed on TV, late night in the back alleys of the Internet…. We all started wanting, curious, nervous…

If this book, or anything else, gets people to examine their own desires and limits, to seek fulfillment, joy and actualization, it’s a good thing.

But I understand the kinksters' grief, sense of loss of uniqueness, or of being cultural rebels. It’s ok to be sad or to feel misunderstood. It’s not ok to be sub-cultural elitists and disparage other’s erotic journey and discoveries.

As for my writer friends… They’re thrilled at the attention the genre is getting, but wishing it had been them to hit the jackpot. I get that. I feel the same way as I type away on my next stories or volume 2 of “Master Han’s Daughter”.
Many of my friends are brilliant writers creating masterpieces in the much-maligned genre of erotica. Their work deserves attention by media and masturbators alike.

Go out and buy some high quality lowbrow smut!

With love and lunacy,

Midori
P.S. I joined Instagram while on AIDS LifeCycle! I’m posting lots of pix. Find me there as “PlanetMidori”

  1. WATCH ME BOTTOM & Enable My Service Time

I am about to go into 10 days of big time bottoming – and you could help make my time in service possible….

Yes, it’s that time. I’m about to bottom big time to the big world for a good cause – in the form of volunteer roadie to AIDS LifeCycle.

There’s less than 2 weeks left for my fundraising. I hope you’ll support me.

AIDS LifeCycle is a 7-day bicycle ride from San Francisco to LA, to raise critically needed funds and awareness for HIV services. I am there to make sure that cyclists are safe and taken care of. For 10 days I set aside my own worries and needs and wants - I am in service to a bigger cause. It's hard work. My team's usually out before the first cyclist (6am) and come in after the last one (7pm or so) I can't say it's 'fun' per se, but it’s deeply meaningful, fulfilling and good.

Along with the labor and service time, I also fundraise.

Yes, I'll be reporting from the road w words and pix. (Facebook, Twitter, LJ, G+)

And this is tax deductible too.

Will you enable my big bottom time?

ART!!

Following up on my last newsletter, where I proclaimed my foolish drive to further pursue my art.

It’s happening!

I just returned from a week and a half in New York, where an architect hired me to install rope art walls in a fancy Financial District bar and lounge. 8 days, 99.5 hours and 6,400 feet of rope later, it’s completed. As soon as they open I’ll be able to post pix and details on my Facebook and twitter. Stay tuned!

With love and lunacy,

Midori

P.S. Big thanks to all of you who sent me birthday wishes. It made me sooo happy!

  1. ART: PROOF THAT I’M INSANE

Loony, crazy, nutbag, touched, unhinged, dotty, daft, loco, bonkers with bats in my belfry – Now there’s proof positive that I am all that. Why? Because I’ve decided to finally forge forward with my irrational desire to create large scale installation art for the general public. For years I’ve been experimenting with these expressions (though often confined in the realm of ‘erotic art’ or freaky fun fringy clubs). I feel like I’ve been holding myself back. Why? Because, that next step that will make me truly happy is a scary, new uncertain place for me. I’ll be honest, the process of finding and applying for shows and grants is really intimidating… Lately a series of events is showing me that the universe is simultaneously taking me by the hand, and kicking me in the ass, to go to that scary place.

So I will.

Plus side: A community space in San Francisco invited me to install a work for the entire month of April 2013.

Minus side: OMG I have no funds and no pending funding at this time!

Plus side: This gives me a opportunity to learn that and ask for help and information. (hey dear reader, do you know anything about this sort of thing?) Yup, you’ll see me on Kickstarter, I’m sure.

Minus side: The huge installation I am planning will require lots of help. I’ll be seeking items from other people, as well as assistance with building.

Plus side: I’m bless with friends and readers who like fun project – which they’d get to be a part of… and gives me an opportunity to meet wonderful people.

I’m putting this forth here, as a bit of a teaser and motivator for myself… I’ll be announcing more about this journey and this particular project in my digital and flesh spaces.

I hope you’ll stay tuned as be my accomplice (or cheer leader).

Thanks!

With love and lunacy,

Midori

6. AIDS LIFECYCLE FUNDRAISING – NEED YOUR SUPPORT

Heeeelp! The fundraising this year’s been really difficult… though the economic vital signs are improving, it’s still not healthy…

www.ToFightHIV.org/goto/Midori

Please support me in my efforts to raise funds for critically needed HIV services through AIDS LifeCycle.

I’ll be volunteering as a Roadie at this year’s AIDS LifeCycle, helping 2,000 cyclists ride down from San Francisco to LA in 7 days, raising awareness & funds while having a challenge of their life….

I suck at asking people directly for this, especially in tough economic times. Would you consider supporting me? How about just the amount of a cup of coffee? Or a week’s worth of coffee?

Thanks! (Yes, it’s tax deductible!)

  1. IS THIS LIFE OR AN ART HOUSE MOVIE?

Last weekend: The hush caught my attention. I looked up from the savory jewels of lamb medallion and foie gras to find myself in what felt like a French erotic art film. Conversations on sensual pleasures among the graceful women and handsome men had suddenly stopped. Candles flickered in the elegant Victorian residence, casting everything in shades of sepia and gold.  We all looked to the end of the long table where two figures stood, motionless. The figure sheathed completely in black, wearing a white mask, slowly undressed the other, a coquettish masked maid with a lithe dancer’s body. The white shirt removed, exposing a black lace bra on flawless skin. They performed a slow tableau of seduction. As swiftly as they appeared, they slipped away, while other masked servants presented the Caramel foam desserts to each of the guests.

This tantalizing dining experience, so uniquely San Francisco, was created especially for the students and guests of ForteFemme Women’s Dominance Intensive by the sensual creative genius of OurGourmetLife.com.  I was so excited I was vibrating!

I seem to be vibrating a lot lately – a surge of creativity is welling up within. It’s amazing what a difference a year makes. This week marks the first anniversary of the devastating tsunami and nuclear disaster in Japan. Stunned, distraught and helpless, I watched my fatherland in peril. I focused on work and forged forward. I suppose that in itself gave me some sense of bond and togetherness with those in Japan.

This spring, however, brings me bountiful gifts of creative opportunities and inspirations. Others around me also seem to be vibrating with creative energy. Great collaborations are in the works, as well as exciting projects of my own. As they take form I’ll keep you posted through this and the social networking sites. I really look forward to inviting you to these!

Wishing you joy and laughter,

Midori

Cooking experiment

I love food... Food ways, food travel, food & politics, sociology, markets, food anthro, and certainly eating. For all that I'm not much into the cooking part. Once in a while, if it's not too challenging, I'll attempt making the food. I'm grateful for K's patience with my occasional weird experiments. Last night was one of those. The fishmonger at the Heart of the City Farmer's Market (SF) had many locally caught fresh fish. One of it was a petrole sole. It's beautiful! I'd never cooked with it. The vender patiently talked me through the prep and assured me it was easy, so I decided to try it.

I searched around on line for an interesting recipe to inspire me that didn't involve breading and frying... Then I made it up from there.
Here's what I did....   I went into the backyard and foraged fennel leaves & flowers, oxalis and mustard greens. I layered a large pan with onions (farmer's market), mustard greens, oxalis, big slices of fresh ginger & elephant garlic (Chinese market), fennel leaves. Then laid the fish on top. I mixed a bowl of liquid (fish sauce, soy, Sriracha hot sauce, lots of pulverized sencha & matcha green tea leaves, and Chinese cooking wine) and poured it over the fish. Topped off the fish with garlic or chive flowers (I'm not sure. I just grabbed them at the Chinese market). The green tea part was a total impulse. I was drinking green tea at the time and wondered what it would do.

Then closed the lid and steamed it slowly.
It worked!!! Served it with rice. The larger mustard greens and the younger buds tasted like 2 different veg.
I'll try this one again sometime.

Here's my bowl of stems and cut-offs with a stowaway keeping me company. In prepping dinner, I also rescued and returned one spider and one ladybug to the backyard.

I'm creating a new program that'll debut in March - and I need your help.
It's not a workshop and it's not a lecture. It's more of a monologue...
Here's the official description

= = =
Disillusioned

Are you experiencing disillusionment in Leather? D/s let you down? Feeling like there ought to be more to it than this? Do you lament that there used to be more to it? Feeling burned out? But who dare speak these things that dampen the leather public cheer and kinky esprit de corps?
Midori will.
In this unusual experience she will put voice to your doubts and heavy hearts, bring them to light of discussion, perspective, suggestions and progress.

How this works: Send in your disillusionments, disappointments, anger, frustration, doubts and feelings of burnout as a letter to Midori via e-mail (info@fhp-inc.com ) or FetLife mail (Midori_SF) or LJ message here. Anonymity guaranteed! She will collect, organize and coalesce them. She will distill them into personas, who in their multiple states will rant, rail & lament in a unique monologue. You can rant, rail & lament along. The group will work together to find growth, catharsis and solutions. This presentation debuts at South Plains Leatherfest.

I hope you'll help - or pass this along...

Thank you!

SPRING WITH A BANG

I’m writing this in Seattle on the eve of our annual Bang for the Buck women’s party. Now in it’s 8th year, The Bang party has replaced plum blossoms and Cadbury Cream Eggs as the sign of spring for me. Tomorrow the Bang Gang will gather for some steamy debauchery for a good cause. Flesh, fantasy, laughter and good will. I can’t think of a better way to welcome the season of renewal!

All the fun is for a reason – raising funds for critically needed HIV services. All the proceeds will go to AIDS LifeCycle and LifeLong AIDS Alliance. The attendees, sponsors and volunteers all make this possible.

If you can’t make the party, but want to support our seemingly ceaseless optimism, we really hope you’ll show your love via my AIDS LifeCycle fundraising page:  www.ToFightHIV.org/goto/Midori

As Valentines is just around the corner, I’m mining the wisdom of all you good readers and friends. I'm writing an article on last-ditch, 11th-hour Valentines rescue ideas for the romantically challenged (or for those who didn't realize how quickly the day crept up on them). Got any ideas? Was this something you gave or received? Or maybe you heard someone else try this. How did it turn out? If I use your idea, I'd love to credit you if you'd like. This will publish 2/13 in my column at @sexismagazine

Wishing you joy and laughter,

Midori

8. AIDS LIFECYCLE FUNDRAISING – NEED YOUR SUPPORT

I’m at it again. I’ll be volunteering as a Roadie at the next AIDS LifeCycle, helping 2,000 cyclists ride down from San Francisco to LA in 7 days, raising awareness & funds while having a challenge of their life….

I suck at asking people directly for this, especially in tough economic times. Would you consider supporting me? How about just the amount of a cup of coffee? Or a week’s worth of coffee?

Thanks! (Yes, it’s tax deductible!)

SMASH DISHES & MAKE SWEET ART WITH ME!

Are you free this
Thursday night? If you’re in the Bay Area, come and break dishes with
me! Once again, I’ve been possessed by yet another bizarre creative
urge. This urge will be unleashed in the group show Building Our Own
White Picket Fences, organized by Femina Potens gallery. I need to
create a huge pile of broken tableware.

[The Info]
What: Shatter Party with Midori
When: Thursday Oct 27, 7:30pm – 9:30pm
Where: Michelle O'Connor Gallery, 2111 Mission St., San Francisco

What: Smash, shatter, break, crack and destroy dishes for art and
catharsis! Midori’s installation, “Every Happy Family” for White Picket
Fences exhibition needs the biggest pile of broken crockery and
porcelain we can create.
Krispy Kreme donuts and refreshments provided to fuel your smashing arm.

Entry Fee: A dish! Bring a dish, cup, saucer or something made of
stoneware, crockery or porcelain to break. (No glass please!) No
dishes? No worries! Dishes await you at the door for $5 minimum
donation. The donation goes to buying all those dishes, donuts and
making this piece possible.

If you have eye protection or glasses, please bring them. If not, we’ll have a few.
All ages welcome.]

The show officially opens the following day so you’re getting a sneak peak
Show info: www.feminapotens.org and
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/306900305/building-our-own-picket-fences-queer-community-art

Here’s what the show is about:

“Building Our Own White Picket Fences is a multi-media visual and
performative art exhibit that offers Queer perspectives on traditional
notions of family, marriage, and relationships. This innovative exhibit
will offer interactive performance and art works for the audience to
explore through performance, video, audio, & playful installations.
Artists Midori, Monica Canilao, Harrison Bartlett, Mev Luna, Amelia
Reiff Hill and Madison Young have come together to create this engaging
body of work that is not to be missed. This body of work serves as a
reflection of the experiences of the LGBT community relationships with
their partners and families as well as creating dialogue around family
dynamics that exist outside of the box.”

I’m also looking to
collect some attendee video footage and commentary, so if can come and
capture that with phone or cam, I’d be grateful!

For those of you who can’t join me, I promise to post pix and vids of the mayhem.

Wishing you wonderful adventures!
