  1. ON GRIEF

I thought about writing a cheery New Years wishes note. Instead, I decided to write about what’s been on my mind lately.

Grief and grieving – and it’s deep power.

Recently I’ve lost several friends, and many close to me have lost their loved ones. Some, suddenly and painfully. Others, after a long struggling fight.

The roller coaster of grief tosses the heart, mind and body through stomach churning loops. We want to get off the ride, but there’s no choice. You have to go through it. Memories come crashing at us. Foreknowledge of their absence stab at us. Regret and sorrow drown us. The past, present and future assault us simultaneously like a hydra-headed temporal monster.  We come through grief, battered and warn, like warriors scarred yet still standing. We know it will come again. I have met people who have been through profound grief. There’s a powerful serenity to them – much like monks who once were warriors. That kind of strength doesn’t come from avoidance or denial of grief. You can’t medicate it away either. I feel like we live in a happiness-obsessed culture. “Don’t be sad. Be happy. Take a pill. Smile. Be an optimist.” Etc etc. After a while it seems an inhumane tyranny of Happiness. Consequently we aren’t good at dealing with our own grief, grief of others, or the grief of a people.

Recently I learned that ravens mourn the loss of their flock members. I like ravens, and that endeared them to me all the more. It made them seem more “human”.  To grieve is human and humane. It allows us to feel our heart beating, our blood coursing, the rawness of other’s sharing the grief and the profound blessings of others connecting to you.

It’s ok. It’s good. It’s human.

With love and lunacy,

Midori

  1. AIDS LIFECYCLE

I’m at it again. I’ll be volunteering as a Roadie at the next AIDS LifeCycle, helping 2,000 cyclists ride down from San Francisco to LA in 7 days, raising awareness & funds while having a challenge of their life….

I suck at asking people directly for this, especially in tough economic times. Would you consider supporting me? How about just the amount of a cup of coffee? Or a couple of days’ worth of coffee?

Thanks! (Yes, it’s tax deductible!)
