This is the cover of Psychology Today magazine. Issue August 2008.
The cover story is "Twisted? 7 Taboos that are Perfectly Natural". Obviously a bit of take off on the Mosely scandal.
It's nice that they are looking at various sexual fantasies as normal.
What's criminal is the cover photo.
Take a closer look...
Here are just a few of the major things I see wrong.
1) Ill fitting cheap ass boots
2) What's with the boot laces done outside?
3) Really poor bra choice
But most importantly
4) The corset (which is a pretty nice one) is on UPSIDE DOWN and BACKWARDS!

The photographer did a nice job, as did the hair and make up artist.

The Stylist? OMG! She actually put her name on this? She got paid for this? How emberassing for the magazine! Didn't she ask the nice freak working at the fetish shop as to how the props are worn? Or did she just run in, buy them and run out quickly, fearing that she might have to actually interact with these weirdos?
Hasn't she actually looked at main stream fashion imagery? It's not like corsets, boots and gloves are rare on the runways and big fashion rags. I understand that maybe the images haven't reached her as they're just from little known designers like Westwood, YSL and McQueen... and shot by little known photographers like Nick Knight and Helmut Newton

What's funny is that the whip is actually quite nice, so that means that the props were obtained at good sources. Given the mag's NY based, they probably bought it at Purple Passion where they have great stuff with great helpful staff. I know they provide props to a lot of main stream shoots and stylists.

Your thoughts?

My shrink had this in his waiting room a few months ago. First thing I noticed was the whip. The whip has no cracker and no fall, distinct creases along its length. It couldn't crack ice or cut butter. Guess they couldn't get a Peter Jack.

Hey, I'm a whip snob. But that's the first thing I noticed.

It's still not bad for a shoot like this. One usually sees the Halloween prop whips. You know the ones?

The cover is cool, but in the other pic it looks like she's never held a whip in her life. Which, of course, is probably true.

It's a little hard to tell, but I believe those boots (being cheap-ass) have speed lacing hooks instead of eyes, so there's no way to lace them on the inside. That being said, you're absolutely right. Were I to see that outfit out in the world, I would certainly laugh and point!

Hey!!!\peed lacing hooks are not, of necessity, cheap ass!!!!!

My favorite pair of boots has hooks and they were not cheap!

Those, I grant you, most certainly are.

None of the above...the corset is BACKWARDS, and the excess laces are tied around the waist...argh!

Seeing this model in those boots, with the laces wrapped around the tops to hastily kind of pretend that the boots actually fit her ... well, it reminded me how unrealistic the bodies of most mainstream models are, and how I really appreciate playing with realistic bodies in the scene.

yeah, similar thoughts - the boots are way too big because she's too skinny for them. could they not have gotten a real sized person this?

and fancy meeting you here *smiles*

*LAUGH*

I, honestly, never noticed, and this is my profession!
I read the magazine, it's sitting right on my desk. NEVER noticed.

Thanks for the chuckle!

I'm a little embarrassed that I didn't notice this until you pointed it out. I'm guessing it went by most PT readers as well.

Being a corset girl myself, that backass thing just cracks me up. Even the photographer should have known better, methinks. Two minutes looking at traditional fetish shoots, as you mentioned, would have clued in a highly visual person as to what looks "right."

And to think they could have made all the other blunders ok by just wrapping her up in clingfilm afterward! :-)

We got this magazine at my work - and when the repectionist seecertly showed it to me - the first thing that popped out of my mouth was "That corset is on wrong" which made the small crowd gathering around the repcetionist desk stare at me. :D

well....

At least the rubber gloves were well shined. However, the "bottom" of the outfit looks like black cotton "granny-cut" panties (for lack of a better term) and seems oddly conservative compared to the rest, so that's another flaw.

Still... I haven't read the article, but it's nice that it's a positive (hopefully?) take on what we do...

Is it possible that the back of the corset was deemed more interesting than the front?

Laces/visual texture vs. (probably hidden) busk?

No excuse for the underwear, though.

And, yeah, get a real woman for this! Shit!
[info]joelledirty wrote:

That's what I thought. The laces are more visually compelling....

I was waiting for someone to notice this. You'd think they'd do their homework.

It seems weird to me that any woman would not know how to put on a corset nowadays. I guess I am a little insulated by my surroundings, pervy and all.

and the article can be found here:

http://www.psychologytoday.com/articles/pto-20080623-000001.html

Most of it is about various "abnormalities" that really are quite comment. The section about kink is here:

http://www.psychologytoday.com/articles/index.php?term=20080623-000001&page=4

Hmmm... it seems that the magazine thinks that "light kink is ok, but if you have a serious fetish you need help". Seems a bit... simplistic.

As a photographer... this is one of the moments you see what the producer (stylist) did, and say "Oh Jeez"... and you ask if she did a second choice... and she says "No, why?", and you say "Oh Jeez" again... and see if you can postpone, and the magazine editor says "No, why?"...

Oh Jeez, LOL

Perhaps if they hired a model with curves then they'd be able to tell which end of the corset was which?

"Uhm, darling? You're fondling my shoulderblades..."

i'm thinking that the prop person thought the corset was a bustier? and they had to scramble at the last minute to find a black bra?

she's kind of cute, in that vanilla girl way. reminds me of someone i met last year at that stupid desert party.

maybe... they're trying to make a subtle-yet-intentional point... that closeted kinky folks need encouragement, community, and education... in order to not come across as... twisted... or something.

Hmm. I simply cannot believe that the stylist had no clue about a corset. I think I agree with a previous commenter that it was put on the way it was to be more visually interesting in terms of the lace pattern.

But then, you are dealing with a stylist who either was rushed to slap together something for the shoot on short notice or one who simply did not do any sort of research on putting together the outfit.

The bra choice is distracting. A long line bra would have been preferred.

I suppose the boy short panty was to impart some kind of modesty for a cover that would sit on the shelf. But, yea...as one person said, seems out of place compared to the rest of the outfit.

But, too late now for them to change it! :D

Just because they're "perfectly natural" doesn't mean that WE do them!
Psychiatrists and psychologists are infamous for the do as we say, not as we do philosophy. They probably run into some store hurriedly and right back out again. Besides, to them, the meat of the article is what is important. The cover is just to attract a little attention.

On the other hand, maybe there's nothing at all wrong with the cover and it is just part of the message: poor fashion sense may just be another one of those taboos that the shrinks at Psychology Today are trying to tell us is "perfectly natural."

My only guess is that the producer (?) wanted to see the laces because he/she thought it would be "kinkier."
It's a pretty big clue they know NOTHING about the subject matter. Was the article any good, at least?

I wish I still had an image of the picture from Rolling Stone with the lead singer of the band Evanescence not only wearing a corset backwards, but she (and/or her stylist) didn't even bother to tighten the laces, and it just hung there, gapping, on the bottom. It was truly epic fashion fail.
